It was November 19, 1892, when Idaho Governor Norman B. Willey signed the proclamation that
officially created Canyon County in the State of Idaho, but the history of this area stretches much further
back in time. From the early tribes that inhabited the areas near Celebration Park some 12,000 years ago
to the early settlements along the Oregon Trail; the history of Canyon County is as deep and as rich as
any place in Idaho.
The introduction of the Union Pacific Railroad in the late 1800s created vast opportunities for
business and agricultural expansion, which to this day remain two of the backbones of Canyon County's
way of life. And the diverse agricultural industry we currently have wouldn't have been possible without
the creation of the New York Canal and Lake Lowell, whose waters continue to irrigate more than
300,000 acres of farmland in Canyon County.
Events like these played a pivotal role in shaping Canyon County into one of the premier places to
live in Idaho. Canyon County Celebration – 120 Years: "This Land of Ours... This Land of Yours" gives
